Common output modes and potential failure modes of encoders

What are the common output forms of encoders?

The main output forms of incremental encoders include

Collector open-circuit output: Simple and economical, but poor anti-interference and short transmission distance.

Voltage output: Common types include TTL level (5V) and HTL level (10-30V), with the latter having stronger anti-interference performance.

Push-pull output: Its performance is superior to collector open circuit, and the signal is more stable.

Differential output: It outputs complementary signals (such as A+/A-), has extremely strong resistance to common-mode interference, and is the preferred choice for long-distance transmission and harsh industrial environments.

From the perspective of system reliability engineering, what are the potential failure modes of encoders?

The potential faults of encoders are as follows:

Early faults: Component defects, poor soldering

Random faults :ESD breakdown, overvoltage, and vibration causing loose connections

Wear faults: bearing wear, light source attenuation, mechanical fatigue

Systemic failures: Design flaws, software errors, interface incompatibility

External faults: Contamination, physical damage, cable breakage
